The remote First Nation community of Wuikinuxv is located in Rivers Inlet on the central coast of British Columbia. Wuikinuxv is an off-grid community and is only accessible by boat or float plane. Electricity in the community is provided by a central diesel generator. Fuel must be shipped in from the Lower Mainland, resulting in electricity costs of $0.58/kWh – over five times more expensive than Metro Vancouver rates.
The community is currently developing a run-of-river energy project to replace the diesel generator and provide its members with clean electricity. Given current energy consumption levels in the community, the clean energy project will not supply enough electricity to fulfill the community’s energy needs at all times of the year.
In an effort to make the project feasible and to ensure enough electricity is generated for the community year round, Wuikinuxv Nation is reducing their energy demand through energy efficiency measures and upgrades. We worked with our sister company, Community Power, to help the community complete a number of lighting upgrades to lower their energy consumption. Community Power have a wealth of experience working on energy efficiency projects with remote communities in BC and as a result have developed a tremendous level of trust with the communities where they work.
Wuikinuxv Nation has just completed a number of upgrades:
These upgrades will help Wuikinuxv Nation to reduce their community lighting consumption by more than two thirds. This significant reduction will deliver both cost and energy savings that will ensure the community has room to grow once their run-of-river clean energy project is complete.
The new LED lighting will additionally reduce maintenance costs and improve outdoor light levels increasing community safety.
Kambo will work with you to develop a solution to improve your building performance, reduce your energy costs, and reduce your greenhouse gas emissions. Schedule a 5-minute intro call.
